Mrs. Nikaya Smith, Mr. Williams, Mr. Olson, and I had the opportunity to chaperone 30 seniors to Virginia Tech on Wednesday, November 10, 2010. The program was totally in Newman Library. The VT librarians were gracious and enthusiastic about our visit. They gave us tours of the library and the Special Collections Department. (The Special Collections inspired one student to rethink her career choice in librarianship—she wants to look into being an archival librarian.) They taught the students website evaluation, research techniques and tips. Then the students had time to do research on their own topics with the multitude of resources that Newman Library has.
I’m sharing this because we, the staff and students, had a great day!!! The kids really liked it and worked diligently. They were courteous, well behaved, and fun!!! LHS does have awesome kids!!! If you have one of those students, ask them what they thought about the trip and the work!! Mrs. Smith and I are so excited about it we plan to make this an annual trip!!! The kids were amazing.
